If you are interested in visiting a city but want to avoid the areas that are traditionally popular with tourists, these sites are where you should start your search. For example, you can find furnished apartments in Istanbul that are located in the heart of the city, close to transport links and hosted by a resident. When you stay at in a private apartment or rent a room in a local’s home, you are not just paying for somewhere to lay your head at night; you are paying for your host’s local knowledge. Who better to tell you where the best restaurants or art galleries and museums are than someone who has an acute knowledge of the area? Who is better placed than someone with local knowledge to inform you of where the tourist hotspots in the city are and what times you should avoid going there?

It is a requirement of booking with these private lettings sites that upon returning from your break you produce a review detailing your experience with your host. This means that you can find out about the quality of the accommodation and your host without committing to booking with anyone. You should keep in mind that reviews are entirely subjective and one guest may have a completely different experience to the next. It is recommended that you use caution and common sense before you decide where you will be staying and who you will be staying with.

Tourist Tips for Jamaica Villas

Jamaica is definitely a top ten tourist spot. Thousands of people migrate there every year, whether just so spend their few weeks of vacation, to live for a month, or even in some cases to transfer permanently. No matter what type of person you are, if you are making a trip to Jamaica, then you are in for a time of fun and adventure. However, there are a few things that you need to do to make sure that your time there is as incredible as possible.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jon-clark/6269479678/sizes/z/in/photostream/

Tip 1: Spend Smart

First of all, just because it’s vacation doesn’t mean that you have to break the bank. Vacations are all about planning and budgeting, and while that might seem like too much work, you’ll thank yourself when it’s over. If not, you’ll just end up spending far more than necessary.
If you’re going to be staying in one of the many luxury Jamaica villas, then that’s great for you. There are many extremely quality villas in Jamaica that offer reasonable prices, and if you’re smart, you can get them for better prices. Renting in advance could save you a great deal off your bill.
You can also save money vacationing if you plan your vacation to fall during a time when most people aren’t vacationing. Beachfront villas always cost less during downtime, as do plane tickets and most other expenses you’ll come up against. Plan your vacation wisely so that as little is spent as possible, and you’ll have much greater ease of mind than otherwise.

Tip 2: Bring Extra Currency

Nothing talks like money in Jamaica, just like everywhere else in the world. Bringing extra cash could get you out of a heap of troubles and ensure that no emergency come up which you are unprepared for. Jamaica accepts US dollars, and most currencies are easy to change if need be.

Be sure that your money is kept in a safe place, however. Just because Jamaica seems like a paradise, and Jamaica villas seem safe, doesn’t mean that some people will snatch at your money if they have a chance. Put valuables away in your villa room, keep case in a secure place on your body, and take as many precautions as possible to protect yourself and your family.

Jamaica is an incredible place to visit, especially if you get the chance to enjoy one of the beachfront villas. Bring mosquito repellant, appropriate clothing, and a happy face, and Jamaica will be a dream come true vacation for you.

Olympic fever hits London

With the 2012 Olympics approaching London is a hive of activity and is sure to be an amazing place to visit when the Olympics get underway, even for those who weren’t lucky enough to get their hands on tickets. London has a great sporting heritage, and the Olympic Games next year could be the pinnacle, get your hands on budget accommodation London as soon as possible as it is likely that every possible room will be snapped up.

French

The truly multicultural city of London will reach a new level when the 2012 games come to town and I am sure Londoners will embrace the thousands of people attending the events. With amazing sights and attractions such as Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, The London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral, and many more to keep the sporting tourists entertained, it will be more than a trip a stadium to watch an event, it will be the experience of London as a whole that people will remember.

If you get your hostel in London there are a number of things I would recommend seeing/doing:

London_Skyline

London’s West End is one of the world’s top destinations for theatre so it is definitely worth while taking in a show one night, especially around Leicester Square or Shaftesbury Avenue which always have a buzzing atmosphere in the evening.

Open top bus tour – by far the best way to take in the best sights of London.

Shopping trip to Oxford Street – Maybe not everyone’s ideal activity, but Oxford Street, along with Regent Street are the prime shopping areas of London with flagship stores of all British major retailers.

Pubs & Bars – No matter where you are in London you certainly won’t struggle to find pubs and bars. The South Bank of the Thames is lined with great pubs with fantastic views of the city, and the areas surrounding the Olympic venues will be packed with fans if you are lucky enough to be here at that time.

London Bridge

Borough Market – If you like food you’ll certainly love this place, although considered slightly expensive it’s certainly worth a visit to treat yourself to some culinary delights.

So as the Olympics gets closer the excitement will rise in the capital, and whether your here for the games, or just visiting for a weekend prior to them, London will not disappoint! The cultural mix, and hustle and bustle you get from most major cities provides a brilliant atmosphere, the locals are friendly and I have no doubt you won’t forget the London experience.

Some fantastic paintings and drawings can also be seen at the Whitworth Art Gallery, which is part of the University of Manchester and is located just outside the city centre.

University

A range of 18th and 19th century art can be seen here at the Oxford Road institution, including works by Thomas, Rowlandson, Ford Madox Brown and J R Cozens, while several modern sculptures can be found in the mezzanine court exhibition room and the gallery grounds.
The Whitworth Art Gallery is also home to the country’s largest collection of flat textiles to be found outside of London, with some pieces dating as far back as the third century.
However, it is not lacking for modern art either. British surrealism and neo-romanticism are among the schools of art represented, with items from Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and Michael Porter among those that can be seen.
Perhaps one of the Manchester art scene’s most famous names is LS Lowry, who was born in the nearby town of Stretford in 1887. Lowry is known the world over for his paintings of industrial 20th century England and several examples of these can be found at The Lowry, a performance and visual arts centre named after him based in Salford Quays.
In addition to having 1,610 square metres of gallery space, the venue also has several theatres and performance studios. A number of temporary exhibitions and comedic, theatrical and musical shows are held at the Lowry throughout the year but it may be the works of the eponymous artist that really capture your interest.
Should this be the case, visit Lowry Favourites, the venue’s permanent collection where some of his most well-known works, including Coming from the Mill and Seascape, can be seen.
You can also take in art exhibitions at the CUBE Gallery, the only space in the north-west dedicated to showing exhibits on architecture and the built environment, the Richard Goodall Gallery in the Northern Quarter and the Cornerhouse, an independent cinema on Oxford Road.

Piccadilly2

However, perhaps the best thing about Manchester’s art scene is that it’s free! It will not cost you a thing to enter any of the above galleries, although there may be a charge for some events and special exhibitions.
Even if you’re trying to stick to a tight budget you will have the chance to see some world-class art while on a break in Manchester so getting booking your trip now.
There are plenty of Manchester hotels to suit all budgets so you get tailor your visit to suit your needs.

About Vembanad Lake

Photo: This Lovely photo was submitted to us by HolidayIQ traveller Aritra Chatterjee. Find out which place this is and browse through many more snaps of the place here--->http://bit.ly/15zug6u

One of the largest lakes in India, the Vembanad Lake is India's longest lake and also the largest lake in all of Kerala. The districts of Allepey, Kottayam and Ernakulam border the lake.

A distinctive feature of the lake is that it has been divided into two parts by the Thannermukkom salt water barrier, which leaves one part of the lake with brackish water perennially and the second part with fresh water from the rivers draining into the lake.

The Vembanad Lake is at the centre of Kerala Backwaters tourism with a myriad ketuvallams (houseboats) crowding it. There are several other reasons which attract tourists to the beautiful lake, in and off season. The town of Allepey, bordering the lake, is considered to be the Venice of the East because of the large network of canals that amble through the town. Also, the Vallam Kali (the Snake Boat Race) held annually in August is a major attraction. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is located on the east coast of the lake and never fails to draw a huge and enthusiastic crowd of tourists.

On an ecological note, the Vembanad Lake is of importance since it is home to more than 20,000 waterfowls in India and is also an ideal habitat for shrimps.

While visiting the Lake, the Vembanad Lake Villas would be an ideal place to stay at. It is an exotic backwater resort with the most picturesque view of the banks of the Vembanad Lake. Coconut plantations, lush green vegetation with exotic plants and trees such as mangoes, bananas and pineapples cover the area around the villas.

The resort comprises of one Kerala ancestral home or Tharavadu and a cluster of cottages designed according to the Kerala architecture but is well facilitated with all modern amenities like en-suite shower and toilet facilities. The main attraction of this resort is its proprietor and family who run the villa as a family business and also, the traditionally prepared food from the daily fresh catch will give you the real taste of Kerala.

Over 1.6 million people live on the banks of the Vembanad Lake and are directly or indirectly dependent on it for their livelihood. The lake is famous for its scenic beauty and has, as a consequence, become a major tourist attraction.

Japan, officially called Nippon, is an archipelago of 6852 mountainous and volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is surrounded by the Sea of Japan, East China Sea and Sea of Okhotsk. The four largest islands, namely Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku, consist of 97 percent of 377,873 square kilometres of the total land in Japan.

The name 'Nippon' means the sun’s origin and Japan is nicknamed as the 'land of the rising sun'. Japan was first inhabited in 30000 B.C. by hunters. The migrants from China and Korea brought along agriculture and metallurgy to Japan. The country was one of the allies in World War I. However, during the World War II Japan had to witness incidents like Pearl Harbour and nuclear bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Japanese is the official language and most of the population follows Buddhism or Shintoism. Tokyo, Yokohoma, Osaka and Kyoto, the former capital of the country, are the four major cities of Japan. Though a roughly homogeneous population resides here, it is home to many old and diverse forms of art and culture.

The country has the world's oldest unitary constitutional monarchy. It is the third largest economy in the world, with a population of 127 million which is the tenth largest in the world. Two third of the economic output is generated by the service sector, while a technologically advanced industrial sector specialises in consumer electronics.

Japan is popular for sumo wrestlers and various martial arts like Kendo, Judo and Karate. Moreover, the ancient culture of Geisha and the modern narrow gauge bullet trains have played a major role in forming Japan's identity. Mt. Fuji, an active volcano, has become a well known symbol of Japan and is visited by thousands of tourists every year.

While Kabuki and Noh are popular styles of theatre, the Bunraku puppet play is also famous. Japanese flower arrangements called Ikebana, paper folding art called Origami and Japanese tea ceremony have become household names all over the world. The culture of Ninja and Samurai also find their origin in Japan.

Japan is ideal for tourists who look for futuristic cityscapes, traditional heritage and a culturally rich experience. Japan has four distinct seasons and the best time to visit the country is the cherry blossom season of November and April. For sports lovers, the winter season from January to March is ideal for skiing in the northern regions of Japan.

About Sunderbans Tourism

Sunderbans is the stretch of a mangrove forests located in the southern tip of West Bengal which touches the Arabian Sea. The site is declared as a forest reserve by UNESCO, and in the year 1989 Sundarbans area was declared as Biosphere Reserve. Initially a part of the reserve was known as Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary. The area of Sundarbans is about 4,110 square km out of which about 1,700 square km is occupied by rivers, canals and creeks.

The literal translation of the word in Bengalis is "beautiful jungle" or "beautiful forest". Many believe that the word "Sunderban" is taken from “sundari” and “ban”, which means "the forests of sundari" -referring to the large mangrove trees. It is the largest Tiger Reserve and National Park in India. It is a place for birdwatchers as the thick forest here is home to the rarest varieties of birds such as Masked Fin Foot, Mangrove Pitta and the Mangrove Whistler.

The national park is famous for its tiger population and it is home to more than 250 tigers. The famous Royal Bengal tigers have now adapted to the highly saline water and are great swimmers. This adventurous wild land is full of animals such as chital deer and rhesus monkey. It also conserves the rare Ridley Sea Turtle. There is a great variety of marine animals and reptiles such as fishes, red fiddler crabs, hermit crabs, king cobra, rock python and water monitor.

The trees here have a capacity to hold the high salinity, lack of soil erosion and daily inundation by high tides. The plants here have adapted to the changing ecosystem. The terrestrial and the aquatic life are maintained by the tidal forms and the mangrove vegetation in Sundarbans.  There are endangered mammals like Genetic Dolphins which live within mangrove creeks lying close to sea. Also the national reserve is a home for Trans-Himalayan migratory birds. Apart from the natural abundance of the place in terms of flora and fauna, it also features the ruins of a 400 year old temple at Netidhopani.

The best time to visit the national park is from October to March because the weather is pleasant and dry during this time. The monsoon season is not a good time to visit the place as the place becomes hot and humid and not ideal for exploring the place.

Singapore is located at a distance of 137 kilometres (85 miles) to the north of the equator. This island country is a city-state in Southeast Asia, off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Straits of Johor in the north separate Singapore from Malaysia, while the Singapore Strait in the south separates it from Indonesia's Riau Islands.

Singapore ranks as the world's fourth leading financial centre and its port is one of the five busiest ports in the world. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit, Singapore has the best quality of life in Asia and eleventh in the world.

Singapore has been named after its founder, Sang Nila Utama. The island country, also known as the Lion City, was first inhabited in the 2nd century AD. During this time, the island remained an outpost of the Sumatran Srivijaya Empire. Singapore became a part of the Sultanate of Johor, Malaysia, between the 16th and early 19th centuries.

Portuguese raiders destroyed the settlement at the mouth of the Singapore River in 1613. Thereafter, the island remained isolated for two centuries. Thomas Stamford Raffles landed in Singapore in 1819 and signed a treaty with Sultan Hussein Shah on behalf of the British East India Company. The treaty outlined the development of Singapore as a British trading post and settlement.

Singapore was made a British colony on 2nd August 1824 by John Crawfurd. Thereafter, it became a part of the Straits Settlements, a British colony in 1826. After British capitulation in the Battle of Singapore during World War II, it was invaded by the Imperial Japanese Army. The British repossessed the island on 12th September 1945.

In 1955, the first general elections were held in Singapore. The country declared its independence from Britain on 31st August 1963. Singapore was granted sovereignty on 9th August 1965.

Singapore is an island country that is composed of 63 islands, including mainland Singapore which is officially known as Pulau Ujong. The Johor–Singapore Causeway in the north and the Tuas Second Link in the west are the two man-made connections between Singapore and Malaysia. Singapore's largest islands are Jurong Island, Pulau Tekong, Pulau Ubin and Sentosa.

The highest natural summit in Singapore is Bukit Timah Hill that is 166 metres above sea level. Nearly 23% of the land area consists of forest and nature reserves. After its urbanisation, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is the largest remaining forest in Singapore.

Due to extensive immigration from various parts of the world, Singapore has become a multi-racial country. The diverse cultures that have significantly influenced Singapore are Chinese, Malays, Indians, Eurasians, Filipinos, Burmese, Japanese and Thais.

Being a multicultural country, Singapore celebrates Chinese, Muslim, Indian and Christian festivals. The Dragon Boat Festival is a popular event that is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar. Some other important festivals include Hungry Ghost Festival, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Art festival and Mid-Autumn Festival.

Singapore also holds other festivals like Singapore Food Festival, the Singapore Grand Prix and the Chingay Parade. Singapore Jewel Festival, the World Gourmet Summit, Singapore Sun Festival and ZoukOut also attract numerous tourists from across the world.

Tourism is a major sector in Singapore and is managed by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), for which the Merlion was designed by Mr. Fraser Brunner. The Merlion has a lion head, which symbolises the legend of the rediscovery of Singapore, and a fish body resting on a crest of waves.

There is no particular tourist season in Singapore which is visited by tourists throughout the year. However, most tourists prefer to visit Singapore during the festive seasons.

Its name originates from the Persian name Cin. The cultural influence emanating from China is known to span across the whole of East Asia.

China is known to have influenced the customs, religion and writing systems of other countries such as Korea, Japan and Vietnam.  The capital city of China is Beijing. Other main cities comprise Shanghai, Shenyang, Guangzhou, Harbin, Tianjin, Wuhan, Chongqing, Hong Kong and Chengdu.

China has a continuous history spanning over 4,000 years. This puts it amongst the oldest civilisations in the world. Chinese history is divided into ancient, imperial and modern ages.

The history of China comprises many dynasties that ruled the country at different points of time. Some of the dynasties include Xia, Shang, Zhou, Quin, Han, Xin, Jin, Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing. The modern part of the history begins with the People's Republic of China (1949 - present).

The advent of civilisation in China led to the invention of writing in the region. The Shang dynasty used Oracle bones for inscribing scripts for forecasting the future. This is the oldest form of Chinese writing. The characters used in this script have influenced the modern Chinese characters prevalent today. In fact, these characters are used throughout the whole of East Asia.

Present-day estimate of the population of China is 1,33,01,41,295 people. According to the 2000 census, the varied ethnic groups in China include Han Chinese, Manchu, Miao, Mongol, Korean and Tibetan amongst others.

The Han Chinese is known to dominate the Chinese population with 91.5% presence. The people of China follow various religions such as Taoism, Buddhism, Muslim and Christian. Mandarin is the language of the country, which is also known as Putonghua.

China is politically led by the Communist Party of China. China as an area was first unified by the Qin dynasty in 221 B.C. This unification continued till the Manchu dynasty, when it was finally replaced by the modern People's Republic of China in 1949. Today, it comprises 22 provinces other than Taiwan, 5 municipalities ruled by the State Council and 5 autonomous regions that consist of Tibet amongst others.

There are numerous world heritage sites in China. The popular ones are Forbidden City (Beijing), Great Wall of China, Old Town Lijiang, Summer Palace (Beijing), Temple of Heaven and Mount Taishan (Shandong).

Located in north-east Asia, China spreads across an area of 95, 96,961 sq km. The area has diverse terrains with mountains, hills, deltas, plateaus and deserts, with climate changes from south to north.

While the northern climate remains subarctic, the southern climate is tropical in nature. The summers in the country are extremely hot and winters are harsh. Fall or autumn, from September to November is considered the best time to visit.
