A Spanish-era galleon wreck was, unsurprisingly, found off Puerto Galera (its name translates to “port of galleons”) in the 1990s, yielding rich archeological treasures. Though there are almost certainly other undiscovered wrecks, there aren’t any divable galleons here—the treasure here is found in the 40+ dive sites in the area, ranging from the easy and idyllic (the Drop Off at Verde Island), to the downright dangerous (the Washing Machine, for obvious reasons). Onshore, the hardcore diving community is found on Sabang, though many tourists prefer the more easygoing beach culture of the Long Beach.
